All I want is SMS -> email/URL notifications for my phone number

Hi folks,

I'd like to receive an email of my SMS message, whenever I receive an SMS on my phone. I have an iOS phone. I know that Android phones allow SMS forwarding, but iOS does not due to Apple's *reasons*. So I've embarked on a journey of discovery to see how I can get what I need as simply as possible.

Does any mobile phone plan provider - especially Telstra - offer SMS -> email/URL?

If not, it seems like this Messaging API is the next best thing, even though it means I'll get a new phone number. But I'd like to clarify 2 things:

1) I already have a Telstra billing account with mobile broadband. I don't have a company (no ABN). Can I still sign up as a PAYG user for the Messaging API?

2) If I follow the authorisation and provisiong steps and supply a notifyURL, what charges would I pay if I received 10 SMS each month? The Pricing Page seems to indicate that the provisioned phone number is free, and getting domestic SMS is 1c/message. But if I use the notifyURL, does this 1c fee apply?

Thanks,

Brett

Hi Brett,

Hi Brett,

This is Vinodh.  Customer Support Lead for Telstradev.

Unfortunately, the use case provided by you is not inherently supported by the Messaging API platform.  However, we have a notifyURL feature which can store the sms that are received.  For more information, please read our blog -> https://dev.telstra.com/content/understanding-messaging-api-callbacks-part-1

Here are the answers for your questions:

1) I already have a Telstra billing account with mobile broadband. I don't have a company (no ABN). Can I still sign up as a PAYG user for the Messaging API?

Answer: Is your billing account a 10 digit number & end with zero? If yes, you can setup PAYG version of the API. Unfortunately we will need the ABN details if we need to create a new billing account to use PAYG Messaging API.

Answer: Great question :).  I think the fee still applies but I will check with our engineering team and let you know.  This may take a while as our team members are on holidays and expected to be back only next week.

Hi Brett,

Hi Brett,

The Engineering team has confirmed that 1c fee apply for sms received even when notifyURL / callback feature is used.

Hope this clarifies.

Vinodh

Thanks Vinodh.

Thanks Vinodh.

The MessagingAPI with the notifyURL callback would suit my requirements quite well.

Regarding signing-up, I don't have a 10-digit Telstra account number. I am a non-business user who works for a growing systems integration firm in Melbourne. If I can get experience using this service (beyond the trial period), it may compare favourably to alternative options from AWS. But if I can't get access (as an individual), then how could I recommend Telstra as a viable option in the messaging space within my company?

Hi Vinodh, any updates from

Hi Vinodh, any updates from the product team?

I've been testing the service and it seems to do exactly what I want. I'd like to sign up, but I'm not a business with an ABN. How can I sign up?

Hi Brett.

Hi Brett.

Since you are already working in a company, Could you please use your company ABN details to create a Telstra account? Once logged in, please send us the details to create the company using this following link  https://dev.telstra.com/content/requesting-telstra-billing-account .  Please note that once we receive correct details, we will need 5-10 business days to enable the account for use.    Once we create a Telstra account using the ABN details and verfify the details supplied, Messaging API will be available for use.  We only charge based on usage so there is no ongoing charges if you don't send or receive messages.

Please let us know if you need any further assistance in setting up the company using ABN.

Regards,

Vinodh
